The Department

The Australian Operations team with members in both Sydney & Melbourne offices and is structured into three core functions:

  • Investment Operations

Covering the middle office functions of Trade Management, Transitions, Regulatory Reporting and Data Management, investment operations supports our investment management business which includes 4 local investment teams across equities, fixed interest and alternatives. Team is responsible for maintaining an accurate investment book of record for use throughout the business and for continuingly improving and updating the global operating model.

  • Fund Operations

Overseeing the back office functions of Fund Accounting (Unit Pricing), Unit Registry (Transfer Agency), Investor Services and Fund Finance (Financial Reporting & Tax), fund operations supports our responsible entity business. Responsible for day to day management of our managed investment scheme range, ensuring we comply with regulations and the terms of our AFSL to issue products to retail & wholesale investors.

  • Performance & Reporting

Providing the functions of Performance Measurement, Attribution and Client Reporting, Performance & Reporting predominantly supports investment teams and distribution teams (sales, product and marketing) by providing a wide range of investment reporting for institutional mandates and for our fund range

Across these functions, the Operations team supports numerous projects and operational changes that support other business teams and seeks to develop and maintain best practice in operational processes.

Janus Henderson Investors operates an outsourced operating model, in partnership with our key Third Party Administrator (TPA), BNP Paribas Security Services (BNP) who provides much of the BAU Investment Operations & Fund Operations production. The primary focus of the Australian Operations team is the oversight and management of these, in addition to the Performance and Reporting services manufactured in-house.

Overview of the Role

The Head of Operations, Australia is responsible for the service delivery across each of the above functional areas, both in Australia and also ensuring that the Australian operations model is evolving and aligned where needed to the global target operating model.

Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Overseeing the operations teams to ensure BAU deliverables are met and the team have what they need to make progress with projects and respond appropriately to ad hoc requests from across the business and management teams.

  • Mentoring team members to ensure they have personal professional development plans in place and have the resources available for training and education to achieve these.

  • Managing team members who may have global functional reporting lines to managers in other global regions. Meeting regularly with their managers to ensure the local & functional reporting lines are working well and that you are coordinated on the priorities, performance assessment and development plans for those team members

  • Meeting regularly with global colleagues to ensure you are abreast of global initiatives, workloads, priorities, and providing business updates on the Australian business.

Service Provider Governance

Janus Henderson Investors operates an outsourced operating model, in partnership with our key Third Party Administrator (TPA). As the Head of Operations, Australia you will be responsible for

  • Managing the relationship and oversight of our key service providers. Our outsourced operating model requires us to have a strong governance framework for monitoring service level and conduct of these providers. This includes BNP Paribas & State Street for services provided that support the above detailed functions, and PwC as the appointed auditor to our fund range.

  • Overseeing the service quality and delivery of our service providers and participate in conversations globally on how these benchmark locally and globally

  • Ensuring a robust framework is maintained for the management of any operational errors and remediation of these, including internal communications to senior management teams and boards.

Management Information & Reporting

  • Presenting key management information to both investment management and responsible entity boards. This is typically a quarterly report on Operations which includes key performance indicators, key risk indicators, risk event (incident) reporting and business updates on internal functions and our service providers.

  • Participate in the Monthly Risk & Compliance Oversight meetings with the Head of Risk & Compliance and senior management team members to discuss current rates of operational issues, trends, known issues and any outstanding audit items

Supporting other business areas

  • Overseeing the service delivery of the operations team internally to the investment teams. Ensure that any queries are responded to appropriately and build a senior relationship with the heads of investment desks.

  • Overseeing negotiation of distributor (platform) agreements to ensure that the terms of the agreement can be appropriately supported by operational processes. This often requires working with our distribution teams to balance the operational risk (reducing bespoke process) against the commercial benefits of gaining a wider distribution of our funds.

Fostering and maintaining a Risk & Compliance culture

  • Cultivating a culture of risk awareness across Operations, ensuring our teams are identifying, communicating and mitigating operational risks that could impact our clients or business if not appropriately managed.

  • Maintain a strong working relationship with Risk & Compliance teams to ensure that our operating model adapts to regulatory change and keeps in step with best practices on managing operational risks.

  • Managing the Operations team input into the annual audit of internal controls to ensure that current operational controls are tested appropriately and provide controls reporting (ISAE 3402) to our clients.

  • Reviewing the Operational elements of the Compliance Plans required for the issuing of registered funds in Australia.

Technical Skills and Qualifications

  • Substantial previous experience managing operational functions with the funds management industry

  • Bachelor degree qualified in a relevant business field

  • Post Graduate qualifications (Dip / Master / CFA / CIPM etc.) highly regarded

  • Experience in a role overseeing third parry providers highly regarded

  • Strong understanding of major investment markets across most asset sectors

  • Working understanding of Australian Corporations Law, ASIC licensing and compliance regimes and superannuation regulations

  • Working understanding of Australian Corporations Law, ASIC licensing and compliance regimes and superannuation regulations

  • Strong understanding of the Australian financial services marketplace and its component parts, across the Retail, Wholesale and Institutional channels

Competencies Required

  • Strong working knowledge of investment markets & securities across asset classes essential

  • Strong working knowledge across asset servicing (Corporate Actions) preferred

  • Highly analytical and able to work with complex valuations and data

  • Highly articulate in written and verbal communication

  • Strong client focus for servicing internal and external clients

  • Able to build and foster relationships with investment teams and other stakeholders

  • Ability to collaborate and work with global teams

  • Reasonable understanding of the regulatory obligations for investment managers within Australia

  • Able to manage small projects and participate in larger business projects
