The department

Janus Henderson offers expertise across all major asset classes, with investment teams situated around the world. These dynamic teams are structured and operate in ways that are best suited to their asset classes and manage products designed to meet a range of investor needs globally. We do not impose top-down house views; instead we allow an appropriate level of flexibility within a controlled environment and encourage the sharing and debate of investment ideas. Our Investment teams are grouped under: Equities, Fixed Income, Multi-Assets and Alternatives.

Overview of the role

You will support Risk Managers in their role of helpingPortfolio Managers improve the risk / return profile delivered to investors. You will contribute to the identification of risks in the portfolios covered, escalation and resolution of issues when identified and development of analytics and/or automation of existing analytics on the desk.

Your role will be to support and participate, in conjunction with the Senior Risk Manager, in the process of monitoring and reporting investment risk. Focus of the role is on listed equities as asset class. This will include but is not limited to: production of risk reporting packs and analytics, identification and escalation of risks, automation of existing desk processes, ownership of the relationship with portfolio managers, data providers and other data consumers.

The role will require overseeing a specific sub-set of equity strategies. The role involves extensive use of data processing systems, data transformations and programming. The interpretation of quantitative outputs in terms of portfolio management principles is of essence.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Have responsibility for following the risk process cycle for equity funds in terms of creation of risk material and analysis of key portfolio features in risk attribution reports.

  • Work with the Senior Risk Manager in covering all aspects of investment risk, performance and other relevant metrics to help manage the portfolio in the client’s best interest.

  • Escalate concerns and highlight the levels/ split of risk to senior management including the Risk Managers and / or the Head of Investment Risk

  • Ownership of Portfolio Risk Dashboards.

  • Work closely with IT and Data Management to ensure data quality and accuracy of risk analytics.

  • Build and maintain relationship between the Risk team and other business support teams within Janus Henderson.

  • Run a number of weekly standard risk reports for different stake holders.

  • Streamline existing risk processes tasks through automation.

  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Has responsibility for supporting portfolios in the Equities Asset Class.

Technical skills and qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar/equivalent front office equity risk role

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

  • Working toward CFA or other professional qualification is useful but not required

  • A strong understanding of fund risks and risk systems, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of them

  • Understanding of risk models and different investment processes

  • High degree of numeracy and intellectual curiosity

  • Technical skills:

  • Proficient with Barra and Risk Metrics risk models together with Factset.

  • Proficient in interpreting various performance and risk attribution outputs.

  • Strong quantitative skills.

  • Proven experience in processing/ transforming large data sets.

  • Knowledge of risk models and concepts such as tracking error, thematic risk, VaR, stress testing methodologies and fundamental investing are expected.

  • Excel /VBA skills are essential, Python programming is required.

  • Some knowledge of the risk and return characteristics of different asset classes beneficial.
