The department

The IT department plays a crucial role in supporting the success of Janus Henderson Investors. With around 200 people between London and Denver, we are responsible for developing and implementing state-of-the-art software to support our fund management, trading, distribution and operational areas and for maintaining a stable and resilient IT infrastructure platform.

Overview of the role

The Database Administration Team has responsibility for the database estate in JHI. This involves the administration and availability of database systems running mainly on Oracle or SQL Server, on-premises and on public cloud platforms, to attain the highest level of reliability and performance possible.

The role involves forging good relationships with a range of IT professionals. These include: database developers to help optimise T-SQL or PL/SQL code, other IT teams to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems, and server engineers to develop and implement capacity and performance management plans. Additionally, the role requires a service-oriented mentality, an ability to take ownership of the problems and requests assigned, and a focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Provide timely 24/7 support for database services such that production database availability is at 100% outside of scheduled maintenance.

  • Ensure availability, integrity, and security of data, according to published SLAs.

  • Stay informed of security vulnerabilities and helps assess risk of external issues. Remediate findings. Deploy patches and software updates as needed.

  • Work with other IT teams and the business to keep the environment on supported versions. Uses metric tools to analyse environment health and proactively address pending issues.

  • Analyse, redesign and improve processes and procedures.

  • Work with other IT groups to ensure disaster recovery plan and backup strategy are appropriate.

  • Monitor the use of compute and storage capacity an ongoing basis and takes actions to optimize use of space, optimise database access and storage and manage resource allocation. Monitor and tune databases to applications as needed.

  • Ensure SLA targets for incident and service request management processes are met

  • Support the Charles River Order Management System at the database level on Oracle, and provide analysis and development support to the project teams.

  • Deliver DBA components of projects and business as usual work to agreed outcome and timeframes.

  • Adhere to, and operate within, our business and change control processes, enforcing Release Management procedures consistently.

  • Be recognised as a reliable, knowledgeable technical resource on Oracle and SQL Server.

  • Understand Janus Henderson’s Business and IT strategy, and how your role supports this.

Technical skills and qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent preferred.

  • Required experience working in a related field.

  • Required experience of MicrosoftSQL server (any versions 2012 to 2019).

  • Preferred experience of Oracle (versions 11g-19c) on Windows or Unix.

  • Preferred experience of PaaS and SaaS implementations in Azure or AWS.

  • Preferred DevOps, Agile, Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform or similar.

  • Preferred RHEL 8 knowledge.

  • Preferred knowledge of Dataguard and RMAN backup and DR implementations.

  • Preferred perl knowledge and ability to write perl admin scripts.

  • Ability to provide overnight on-call support for batch processes.

  • Experience of WAN-based replication or multi-site use over a WAN.

  • Knowledge of large scale fault tolerant system essential, specifically Windows clustering / SQL Clustering / AlwaysOn / DataGuard / VMWare SRM.

  • Knowledge of host virtualisation with VMWare or Hyper-V.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Competencies required
