The department

Distribution is responsible for the marketing, promotion and ongoing development of our product offering, for both institutional and intermediary channels globally. Distribution is a trusted partner to our clients and we enable investment solutions through active management. Areas within Distribution consist of Sales, Global Marketing, Global Product and Investment Trusts .

Overview of the role

The primary role of the Head of Institutional Channel Marketing, North America is to develop a strategy crafted to help drive client acquisition, client happiness and retention, and consultant ratings. This includes clearly establishing what differentiates and strengthens Janus Henderson’s reputation of having competitive investment strategies and timely educational content that will help investors meet their long-term goals. This position requires strategic relationship building with external clients and internal partnerships with the Institutional Sales team members. You will be responsible for all Institutional marketing communications, integrated marketing efforts, content, campaign reporting, and personnel/team management.

Duties and responsibilities

You will:

  • Develop a fully integrated marketing strategy to effectively position our Institutional business across multiple mediums (presentations, collateral, web, client-facing events, and written communications).

  • Partner with Head of Institutional Distribution, product management, product marketing, and other colleagues to build individual marketing strategies for each of our key institutional products; ensure that product positioning and key differentiators are carried consistently across all mediums and support the firm’s broader objectives.

  • Continue build-out of a brand identity for our Institutional clients that establishes Janus Henderson as a strong asset manager and differentiates us in the marketplace; ensure that brand positioning is carried across all key mediums (print, digital, speaking opportunities, advertising, webinars, etc).

  • Drive consistent collaboration, communication and partnership with Head of Institutional Distribution to guide strategic marketing efforts, including messaging, and branding.

  • In partnership with Thought Leaders across the firm (Chief Institutional Client Strategist and our Content Team) drive proactive and compelling investment insights crafted to help raise and retain assets in focus strategies. Package the content across key mediums (print, web, presentations, webinars, etc.).

  • Partner with our marketing automation and technology to develop lead-generation programs that capture client interaction data within a centralized CRM system and trigger notifications to relationship managers based on a client engagement model.

  • Share campaign vision, plan, and results across the business by tracking progress and providing monthly updates.

  • Encourage, manage and develop a team of marketers.

  • Maintain fiscal responsibility over the North America Institutional budget and resource allocation.

  • Align marketing resources (time, tools, budgets, people) for maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Work closely with the broader marketing organization and manage outside vendors on the creation and execution of initiatives as required.

    Competencies required

    In addition to putting clients first, acting like an owner, and succeeding as a team, the competencies for this role include:

  • Demonstrated success identifying and developing partnerships and positive relationships within the Institutional client segment at the regional and global levels.

  • Deep market knowledge of the global asset management industry and deep understanding of the Institutional client segments, competitive landscape as well as investment strategies, key regulatory issues and industry trends.

  • Solid understanding of the Institutional sales and client retention process.

  • Proven marketing experience in the development of campaign messaging and value propositions for Institutional clients.

  • Proven team leadership, team management and mentor experience. Prior experience managing teams is required.

  • Strong project management skills, including an ability to move projects forward in a complex environment.

  • Ability to engage, influence and direct others (outside direct reporting line) to execute against business and firm goals.

  • Detailed understanding of compliance requirements for institutional marketplace.

  • Strong personal presence and poise with demonstrated success in presenting to and collaborating with executive leadership.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; group presentation skills a must.

  • 10+ years of Institutional marketing experience (with 5+ years in a management role) within the financial services industry, including direct contact with distribution and in-depth knowledge of the distribution process.

  • Broad marketing experience in fixed income, equity, multi-asset and alternatives platforms. Proven ability to develop comprehensive marketing strategies that successfully drive business goals.

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

    Ongoing competence in the role to be assessed, in line with applicable regulatory requirements, by:

  • Annual performance appraisal.

  • Completion of all assigned compliance training.

    At a minimum the role will require you to:

  • Understand and follow laws and regulations applicable for your role, seeking the help of your supervising manager or Compliance if additional guidance is required.

  • Understand and abide by all Janus Henderson policies applicable to your role, and seek support/guidance of the policy owner guidance when required.

  • You are ultimately accountable for your actions and responsible for seeking further information on any or all of the above as necessary.

    Compensation Information

    The base salary range for this position is $155,000 to $165,000. This range is estimated for this role. Actual pay may be different.


    Annual Bonus Opportunity: Position is eligible to receive an annual discretionary bonus award from the profit pool. The profit pool is funded based on Company profits. Individual bonuses are determined based on Company, department, team and individual performance.
